Dot Barber’s career story

Dot Barber, longtime staffer for former North Carolina House Speaker Liston B. Ramsey, wrote to me about her NCGA career history in response to a post I wrote in July about legislative staffers who had been here the longest, (Dot Barber and Shirley Phillips have worked here continuously since 1965, Joan Leatherman since 1967, Anne Cole 1963, 1967, 1980-date, Penny Williams 1959, 1987-date

Here’s Dot’s story:

I … started out [in 1965] in the House Secretarial Pool … worked there for 2 sessions …. and then moved on to work with members and became [a] committee clerk.   I was a committee clerk for the following:

  1. 1969 – Local Gov. – Chairman Liston B. Ramsey
  2. 1971 – House Legislative Redistricting – Ramsey
  3. 1973 and 1975 – Finance – Ramsey
  4. 1978 (short session) House Rules – Ramsey
  5. 1979  Rules – Ramsey
  6. 1981 – 1988 – Speaker’s Adm. Officer
  7. 1991 – State Personnel – Ramsey
  8. 1993 – Financial Institutions – Ramsey
  9. 1999 – Financial Institutions – Ramsey
  10. 2002 – ABC – Rep. Bob Hensley
  11. 2005 – Commerce – Rep. Ray Rapp
  12. 2007 – Appropriations – Sub. on Education – Rapp
